Trim, Doors, and Staircases

Trim and staircases are the fussiest work in the house, and they are the reason people call us back.

We paint baseboards, casing, crown, chair rail, window trim, interior doors, and entry doors, and we do full staircases: treads, risers, stringers, newel posts, spindles, and handrails. This is slow work. There is no way to roll a spindle. Every one gets brushed, and a staircase can have fifty of them.

The single most requested version of this job in Fort Wayne is honey oak going to white. It is a transformation that changes the whole feel of a house, and it is also the one where prep decides everything: oak has an open grain and a factory finish that paint will not grab without proper sanding and the right primer. Done correctly it looks like new millwork. Done quickly it looks like painted oak.

Staircases in particular reward patience. One customer wrote that we painted two sets of stairs in her home and that Amanda "has the fortitude to figure out the hard stuff," including climbing out through a basement window after finishing the basement stairs so she would not walk on wet treads. That is the kind of problem a staircase throws at you, and planning the sequence so a family can still get up and down is part of the job.

We also do a lot of two-tone work: white spindles with a stained or black handrail, dark treads with white risers, or black balusters against a natural oak rail. If you have seen a look you want, show us a photo at the estimate and we will tell you honestly whether your existing woodwork will get there.

Entry doors are their own small specialty. A stained wood door that has gone grey and flat can usually be brought back rather than replaced, and a flat interior door painted a deep colour is one of the cheapest changes with the biggest effect.

Trim, Doors, and Staircases Questions

Can honey oak trim really be painted white? +

Yes, and it is one of our most requested jobs. The result depends entirely on prep: oak needs proper sanding and a primer that grips the factory finish, or the grain and the old sheen come through.

Can we still use the stairs while you work on them? +

Usually yes, with planning. We stage the work so there is a way up and down, and we will tell you in advance which hours or which day the staircase is genuinely off limits.

Do you restain doors as well as paint them? +

Yes. A faded or weathered stained door can often be stripped, restained, and sealed rather than replaced, and it is a fraction of the cost of a new door.

“Amanda, painted a bunch of different rooms in our house about 2-3 years ago. Kids bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms, basement. She did a really great job with all the areas she painted. Her prices were also, affordable. I would recommend her to anyone I know needing a painter. We would also, use her again to do any painting we might need in the near future.”
